Some days, a workout means heading to the gym. Other days, it means taking a long walk after dinner, hitting a local trail on Saturday morning, playing a game of pickleball or grabbing the dog and getting outside before everyone starts climbing the walls.
At Preston Park Apartments in Burlington, NC, staying active does not have to mean following the same routine every day. Between the fitness and outdoor amenities right at home and Burlington’s nearby greenways, trails, parks and recreation areas, there are plenty of ways to move, explore and enjoy some fresh air.
That is one of the things we love about life here—you can make being active part of your normal routine instead of another thing you have to schedule around.
Start Right at Home at Preston Park
You do not necessarily have to leave the community to get moving. Preston Park offers a 24-hour fitness center, yoga and spin room, pickleball court and community walking path, giving residents different ways to exercise depending on the day.
Maybe you squeeze in a workout before work. Maybe you meet a neighbor for pickleball after dinner. Or maybe your idea of exercise that day is a walk around the community with your dog.
All valid choices.

Our community also includes a leash-free dog park, so four-legged residents have a place to get some exercise too.See everything available at home on our Preston Park Amenities page.
Explore Burlington’s Greenways
Burlington continues to expand its network of greenways and bikeways to connect neighborhoods, parks, schools and other destinations throughout the city.
One local option is the Downtown to Elon Greenway, a completed portion of Burlington’s larger greenway network. It gives walkers, runners and cyclists another way to get outside while experiencing more of the Burlington and Elon area.
Greenways are especially nice when you want movement without necessarily committing to a full hiking trip. Put on your shoes, grab your water bottle, turn on your favorite podcast and go.Sometimes that is all the workout plan needs to be.

Take an Easy Walk or Run at Burlington City Park
Not every outdoor workout needs hiking boots.
Burlington City Park offers a 1.8-mile loop made up of gravel, sidewalk and asphalt surfaces. The trail winds through the park past recreational areas and natural spaces and is used primarily for walking and running. For someone who wants an approachable walking or running route, City Park can be a great option.
It is also easy to make the outing as relaxed or active as you want. Walk a loop, add extra mileage on the walking track or simply enjoy getting outside for a while.
Discover Great Bend Park at Glencoe
Great Bend Park is another great option for residents who enjoy walking, hiking and spending time near the water.
Located along the Haw River, the park connects visitors with the Haw River Trail and gives you an opportunity to experience one of the area’s more natural landscapes without needing to plan a full weekend getaway.
Walk along the river, enjoy the wooded scenery or simply find a change of pace from your normal exercise routine.
It is also an easy reminder that living in Burlington puts you close to more outdoor recreation than you may realize.
Try the Trails at Lake Cammack
If your ideal exercise comes with water views, add Lake Cammack to your Burlington outdoor list.
The Lake Cammack Trail is a 2.4-mile natural-surface, out-and-back route with wooded areas and open views of the lake. The trail is used for walking, hiking and trail running, and dogs are permitted on leash.
The lake area also offers additional outdoor recreation, so it can become more than simply a place to get your steps in.
Pack some water, bring a friend and make an afternoon of it.

Hike Along the Haw River Trail
When you want something that feels a little more like an escape, head toward the Haw River Trail.
About 20 miles of the Haw River Trail are currently open to the public throughout Alamance County, including several miles in Burlington. The natural-surface trail follows portions of the Haw River and can be used for hiking, walking, trail running, fishing and enjoying the scenery along the river. It is also part of North Carolina’s larger Mountains-to-Sea Trail system.
Different access points allow you to choose the kind of outing you want, including Great Bend Park, Glencoe Paddle Access, Indian Valley Paddle Access and Stoney Creek Marina. Burlington’s trail system notes that Haw River Trail routes can extend up to approximately 8 miles depending on the segment you choose.
This is the kind of place that can turn a free Saturday morning into something much better than accidentally spending 3 hours scrolling on your phone.

Walk, Run or Play Disc Golf at Springwood Park
If you like having options, Springwood Park should definitely be on your Burlington recreation list.
The park includes the Springwood Trail, a paved loop that works well for walking and running and can be adjusted depending on how far you want to go. The route circles the athletic areas of the park and gives you an easy option for getting outside without needing hiking boots or a complicated plan.
But walking and running are only part of what makes Springwood fun.

If you are new to the sport—or just want something a little more casual—the course also includes a 6-hole Rookie Run designed for beginners and family fun.
Disc golf is a great way to combine exercise with a little friendly competition. You are walking, getting outside and exploring the park, but it feels a lot less like a traditional workout. Bring a few friends and make an afternoon of it, or try the Rookie Run if you have never played before. And if your first few discs end up nowhere near where you intended them to go, congratulations—you are officially playing disc golf.
Springwood also includes athletic fields, playgrounds and picnic areas, making it a good option when different members of the household have different ideas about what “getting outside” should look like.
Your Workout Does Not Have to Look the Same Every Day
Living an active lifestyle is much easier when you actually enjoy your options. At Preston Park, your week might look something like this:

Tuesday: Take an evening walk around the community.
